Learn More About Bathroom Lights

What IP rating should bathroom lights have?

Given the presence of water and moisture in a bathroom, lights in this space should have an IP (Ingress Protection) rating of at least 44; this ensures they're adequately protected from splashes of liquid. For lights directly above a bath or shower, IP65 is preferred. All items in our Bathroom Lighting collection are IP44 at minimum, so you can rest assured of their safety.

How do I choose the best bathroom lighting?

As long as you ensure your bathroom light fixtures meet safety standards (IP44), choosing the best bathroom lighting for your space is often a matter of preference. Flush ceiling lights give even, overall illumination and suit smaller bathrooms, while wall lights on either side of a mirror provide flattering, shadow-free light for shaving or make-up. Choose a single fixture for compact spaces or a double for wider mirrors.

Can you put any light fitting in a bathroom?

No, not every light fitting is suitable for a bathroom. You should ensure that light fittings in a bathroom meet the minimum safety rating of IP44, and light fittings above a bath or shower should be at least IP65 rated. Standard decorative fittings designed for living spaces often aren't sealed against water and shouldn't be used near a bath, shower or basin. Our bathroom lighting collection is all IP44 or above, meaning it meets safety standards.

Do you need special light bulbs for bathroom lighting?

There is no need for a specific bulb within a bathroom (unless the bulb is exposed to lots of direct moisture - e.g. inside a shower); the requirement lies with the light fixture to be IP44 or above. Standard LED bulbs will work well in a bathroom and are less susceptible to moisture damage than older bulb types.
