Learn More About Lampshades

How do I measure a lamp for a lampshade?

To measure a lamp for a lampshade, take two key measurements - the width and height of the base. It is generally recommended that your lampshade's width should be double the width of the lamp base, and the height should be roughly two-thirds of the base height. For example, if your lamp base is 40cm high and 12cm wide, the lampshade should be roughly 27cm high and 24cm wide. Of course, this is also subject to personal preference and should only be considered a guiding rule.

How do I clean a lampshade?
  • Wire and rattan lampshades: We recommend using a soft bristle brush on a regular basis to remove any built up dust or dirt. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals as these may damage the finish.
  • Linen, jute, and cotton lampshades: We recommend always handling the item by its fitting, rather than the fabric. Regularly wipe the lampshade gently with a microfibre cloth or duster.
  • Velvet lampshades: We recommend using a soft-bristle brush, a microfiber cloth, or a sticky lint roller to gently remove dust. Velvet should not be cleaned with water, as it can stain or damage the fabric. Always handle the lampshade by its frame to prevent crushing or creasing the velvet. Keep the lampshade out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and rotate the lampshade occasionally to ensure even exposure to light and prevent uneven fading.
  • Banana leaf lampshades: Carefully dust with a damp cloth and ensure it is dried completely with a clean cloth to prevent water spots or damage.
How do you fit a rattan lampshade?

Our rattan lampshades are designed to be fitted in the same way as a regular lampshade for ease, and are built around a metal frame for added structure and durability.

Are all lampshade fittings the same?

In the UK, lampshades typically use a 29mm bayonet fitting. However, this does not mean all lampshade fittings are exactly the same - the fitting can be located as a base fitting, drop fitting, or ceiling pendant fitting.
